Leaping for Joy!
“(W)hen Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb” Luke 1:41
On January 15th, 1988, I was leaping for joy! My grandmother had been praying that I would find a holy husband, and on that day Kevin (that godly man) asked me to marry him! That started me on a journey that brought me closer to my faith and stretched me to see God in unexpected places.
Unlike Elizabeth in today’s Gospel, I did not immediately recognize that Kevin was bringing Christ intimately and hidden to me like Mary was. What I did recognize, however, is that we had to start our mandatory marriage preparation! With uncertainty and apprehension, we met our sponsor couple who welcomed us in our sacramental preparation and walked with us in loving service. The process and our sponsor couple were a gift! Gaining awareness that we were responsible to bring Christ to each other was both awe-inspiring and overwhelming.
From that moment, Kevin and I knew that we wanted to participate in the Sponsor Couple ministry and help bring Christ to those couples preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. Even with three young children and what seemed like not enough time in our busy lives, the Holy Spirit and a persuasive staff member at Prince of Peace (thank you, Maggie) tapped us on the shoulder and invited us to start the training process to become a sponsor couple. With an open heart and a willingness to be vulnerable, we leaped and said “Yes!”
“(T)he Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name” Luke 1:49
Twenty years later, we are still involved in the ministry, and after thirty years of marriage, I now intentionally recognize Christ in my husband daily.
As we sit down with each newly engaged couple, I feel a leap of joy and excitement. Not only do we have an opportunity to be like Mary by bringing God to other couples, but like Elizabeth, we see and recognize the Lord Jesus in the couples we meet.
May we each be aware of the presence of Jesus in our lives every day and feel the leap of joy in all our encounters.
